If you are here, that means that you are either considering interning in NYC or, better yet, on your way to your internship abroad. Either way, you need some facts about New York City -its culture, its vibe, the must-see- to assure you have an amazing time during your internship. So, let’s dive into it!
Work culture
First things first, we need to talk about the work culture -the fun parts are coming, trust us. In New York’s business world, the most important thing to consider is time management. Being a fast-paced city all businesses in it must keep up with the bustle, and so do the people. This means that you must be on time for everything, and by on time we mean between 15 to 30 minutes early, otherwise you are just wasting people’s time -and money.
It sounds like a lot, but you’ll have time to work on other projects while you wait, and more importantly, there’s a silver lining. New York businesses understand the craziness of such a fast-paced work environment, so they usually offer flexible schedules or the famous Summer Fridays.
Getting around
As we said, getting places on time is important, but we’ve all seen the scene on the rom-com where the guy or the girl jumps out of the cab and starts running to get to their significant other in time. That’s not just a dramatic scene.
Traffic in NYC is crazy, so much so that walking is sometimes faster than taking a taxi or hopping on the subway. Having said that, your second best friend will be the subway, as it runs 24/7 and can get you around through most of Manhattan. Other possible methods of transportation are: taxi or car services like Uber & Lyft, buses, bikes, and ferries.
Enjoying your free time & using money wisely
Now that we’ve covered the stressing parts, it’s time for some tips and tricks to enjoy your days off and not spend all your money while you’re at it. To begin with, we recommend making your own lunch. Yes, we know NYC is one of the many foodie paradise cities, but this will help you save so much money for yourself or the weekends! If you’d rather spend on food than on experiences -well, food is also kind of an experience- there are tons of free events around the city! MOMA and other museums have free admission hours, and you can always find something to do at NYU or Central Park. Of course, do save some money for a couple of nights out, a trip to see the Statue of Liberty, or to catch a great view of the city from the legendary Empire State.
You’re all set then! Get ready to have a great time during your internship abroad in NYC. Don’t forget to always balance work and play and have fun!
Happy internship!
