Visiting a country requires us to adapt, whether it is for a few days, to start a new life or for an internship. It’s important to know a few things about your destination before you arrive to avoid misunderstandings or even an embarrassing moment.
We know that very funny anecdotes come out of misunderstandings, but we assure you that you don’t want them to happen to you. Here are 5 tips to avoid problems when facing a new culture.
Look up the language & slang
There are several words that are the same in different languages but that can have very different meanings. In one country something may mean a sweet dessert, but in another it may mean a bad word. Also, it’s very important to be careful with translations, since you could be saying strange things without the proper context.
Learn some local manners
Some places are very strict with social and behavioral rules. Research very well some of them to avoid doing something that can make you seem rude and to minimize misunderstandings. For example, in China, completely finishing the food served means that you are still hungry, so try to leave a little food on your plate.
Don't be afraid to ask questions
It may seem weird or something too simple, but it’s effective. There are more differences than you imagine, so you must be constantly learning to better understand people, especially if you want to be part of their culture. If you don’t know what to do in a situation, you can always ask, the people around you will value your interest in acting correctly.
Respect traditions and customs
You may not agree with some of the customs of your destination, but remember that you cannot change them. Each culture is different, but they are all worthy and we must respect them. You may have to act a certain way out of politeness, but if it’s not your thing and you can’t adapt, don’t worry, you don’t have to stay in that place forever.
Be patient
Adapting will be a process that can be very difficult if there are big differences with your culture. Remember that a trip is an experience full of challenges and worthwhile learning, try to avoid frustration. Talk to your family and friends about these differences and tell them how you feel about it, in this way you can find words of encouragement and you can even laugh at a situation with someone who thinks the same as you.
