Perhaps you had not thought about this because many times we believe it’s something that will happen automatically. While you might be lucky and find a friendly environment that makes everything easier, it’s usually hard to find your tribe abroad.
You will be the new person who doesn’t know anyone, and this may be a small thing for some, but it can be terrifying for others. No matter how you feel, whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert, finding friends will take some time. We want to help you make it easier and help you not to get discouraged. So, here are some tips:
Don’t judge a book by its cover
You know it, it’s the golden rule. Sometimes we can dismiss people quickly because of small details. Give yourself the opportunity to get to know all the people around you. That quiet person or the one with a “strange way of dressing” may be a very interesting person.
Make and effort to socialize
Many times we think everything happens naturally, but that’s not true. Try to be friendly, don’t get nervous and just ask someone about their favorite music. You never know what genre will spark a friendship. Try not to miss a party, even if you don’t like them. Also, take advantage of every small chance you have to go out. This way you can meet new people.
Be open to sharing
One of the best ways to empathize with other people is to give them confidence. Talk about yourself and you will see how others begin to do the same.
Sharing snacks can also be very effective in getting closer to people. Did you know that when you give something sweet, you cause people to associate you with sweetness?
Keep trying
Work is not the only place you can make friends. Giving yourself time to do other activities that allow you to meet new people, like a yoga class, painting or some sport can be ideal since you will meet people with similar interests to yours.
Research places and events with music or food from your country, there are even groups on Facebook to find people from your hometown, thanks to this you will find people who are in the same situation.
